2020 湖景村调查报告
Lakeside Village Investigation Report (2020)
Dear Miss Gilman:
Our Surveyor Volcker submitted his first investigation report a month ago. Volcker is of the view that there are unusual religious activities in Lakeside Village, which may adversely affect the upcoming investigation. In fact, we all agree that such religious activities may put the Surveyor in danger.
As Volcker has already applied for leave, we will confirm whether he will continue with the investigation after his leave ends or will we send another surveyor to Lakeside Village. The following is the original report from Volcker:
Investigation Report 1
September 12, after numerous rejections, I found a room with immigrants Eugene Hayward and Marjorie Hayward. The terrain of Lakeside Village is odd. The villagers’ main living area is enveloped by forest at the foot of a mine. A part of it is also a plot close to a lagoon with mountains on three sides, and the only way to get to it is through a narrow mountain path.

September 13, I tried to go to the lagoon plot again. There were villagers guarding at the entrance, and I only got permission to go in after some negotiations. There is an entrance to a cave in the northern part of the lagoon plot, where several suspicious personnel dressed in yellow robes were on guard. I didn’t attempt to get close.
Investigation Report 3
September 15, a large boat appeared on the shore of the lagoon, and guards in yellow robes were on guard. I think they may belong to a certain religious group, and they have certain privileges in Lakeside Village. The villagers wouldn’t answer my questions about them. Eugene and Marjorie called the guards “Disciples”.
Investigation Report 4
September 17, I tried talking to a Disciple who turned out to be surprisingly friendly. This religion didn’t have a name, or he wouldn’t tell me. Anyway, according to the guard’s description, they strive to disseminate the will of “god”, and practice the loving principles of “god”. However, this “god” lived in the bottom of the lagoon in Lakeside Village, and people must offer a sacrifice in order to get god’s love. He didn’t tell me anything about the method of sacrifice or the offerings.

September 19, after 2 days of hinting, Marjorie told me something about the sacrifice. She once hid from the mountain top and secretly observed the sacrifice activities from afar. The Disciples threw offerings from the boat and a giant shadow soon rose to the surface of the lagoon. The villagers yelled out their wishes from the shore, so loud that their voices reached the mountain top. Regrettably, it was too far for her to see what the offerings were. According to Marjorie, the villagers’ wishes all came true. But the wishes she described were just daily needs. From my investigation experience, I think it’s just a scam that the wishes come true.
Investigation Report 6
September 21, I visited each and every villager in the past 3 days and told them about my desire to know more about the legend of the lagoon god. They were extremely manic about this topic, so I got sufficient information. The Disciples were in charge of the offerings used in sacrifice activities, which are livestock. After throwing the livestock into the lagoon, the lagoon god would rise to the surface and the villagers would tell the lagoon god their wishes. This part of the description is consistent with what Marjorie told me, but the part which Marjorie didn’t understand was where the Disciples opened the sanctuary to the north of the lagoon after the wishes were made, and took the remains of the offerings inside for the last part of the ceremony. But no villager knew what the last part of the ceremony was. I think it may be risky to ask the guards about that, but the next sacrifice will be held in 5 days, and I will find a way to go inside the sanctuary to investigate.
We have yet to receive Volcker’s seventh investigation report. We play to get in touch with his family so that he will submit the report as soon as he gets home.

9月15日，咸水湖边出现了一艘大船，同样有穿着黄色长袍的守卫驻扎。我认为他们可能隶属某个宗教团体，这些人在湖景村似乎拥有某些特遣。村民拒绝回答相关问题，尤金与玛乔丽称呼那些守卫为“圣徒”。

9月19日，经过两天的旁敲侧击，玛乔丽向我透露了一些关于献祭的事情。她曾经躲在山顶从远处偷看过一次祭祀活动，圣徒从船上扔下祭司，不久后从湖底浮起海神巨大的阴影，而岸上的村民们则大声地诉说着他们的愿望，那声音大到足够到达山顶。很可惜，距离太远了，她看不清祭品究竟是什么。根据玛乔丽所说，村民的愿望最终都实现了。但她描述的愿望仅仅是一些日常所需，根据相关的调查经验，我认为愿望成真很可能是一种骗局。

9月21日，在过去的三天里我走访了每一位村民，表露出想要进一步了解湖神传说的意愿。他们对这个话题极度狂热，因此我得到了充足的消息。祭祀活动的用品由圣徒准备，均为活牲。向湖中投入牲畜后，湖神现身浮上水面，而村民们对湖神说出自己的愿望。这部分描述与玛乔丽的介绍一致，但玛乔丽不了解的部分是，许愿后圣徒会打开咸水湖背面的圣所，将祭品的残骸放入圣所完成最后的仪式。但最后的仪式究竟是什么，没有一个村民知道。我认为向守卫询问可能是个冒险的举动，下一次祭祀将在五天后举行，我会做好准备在那一天想办法进入圣所调查。
沃尔克的第七份报告尚未寄回，我们计划与他的家人取得联系，催促他回家后立刻提交报告。

My dear friend Napoli:
This is the fifth day since I got here.
We still haven't received any message about the commencement of the "Jamboree".
At the current stage of our investigation, the prime suspect is a woman named Gilman.
The woman arrived on the third day wearing really peculiar clothes. She was eccentric and always kept her distance from others. She would disappear in the afternoon every day and reappear at dusk smelling foul (despite her clothes looking clean throughout).
I tried to follow her but failed as she seemed to disappear into thin air. (Given my profession, this is quite upsetting).
However, all this suspense is beginning to clear up.
Today, the fifth participant arrived - he wouldn't tell us his name and simply said he's a writer.
He arrived almost at the same time as another biologist. But since he introduced himself last, I considered him the last one to arrive.
Gilman was clearly paying an unusual amount of attention to this writer. They even has a chat between themselves in a language I couldn't recognize - I have no idea what they were talking about.
Yet I realized that this writer has a familiar scent, just like the humid and muddy scent Gilman came with at dusk every day.
Perhaps I can try to follow this writer tomorrow and see if I'll come into something new.

2. Methodology:
No. 6-1-3 arrived perfectly on schedule. Given her understanding of the situation, No. 6-1-3 quickly chose No. 6-0-5 as her first target for investigation. Initially, No. 6-1-3 saw uninterrupted progress, eventually leading to her taking over the entirety of the project. However, following the unfortunate accident that claimed No. 6-1-2's life, No. 6-1-3 began showing a keen interest in No. 6-0-5 and the Lakeside Village. This, in turn, brought her to the attention of No. 6-0-5 and No. 6-1-4. Following the introduction of No. 6-1-6, No. 6-1-3 was almost able to avoid being "sacrificed" by No. 6-0-5 due to her extraordinary intuition. A moment's hesitation, however, caused No. 6-1-3 to miss a crucial piece of "divine insight," and lose her chance to escape.
3. Analysis Summary:
After confirming the stability of the medicine's effects, I decided to extend an invitation to No. 6-0-5. For the longest time, I lacked a large enough control group, but that all changed after No. 6-1-3 appeared.
A candidate "provided" to me by an old friend, No. 6-1-3 has the potential to bring this entire experiment to an unfortunate and premature end. However, a unique test subject such as herself is more than worth the risk.
This has been, without a doubt, my most dangerous experiment to date, as well as my most successful one.
No. 6-1-3 is intelligent, alert, and highly motivated, and her special abilities allowed us to discover a fragment of the truth lying at the bottom of the lake. No. 6-0-5's story filled the gaps in her understanding and left enough space for the medicine.
By far the most well-informed participant in the entire experiment, No. 6-1-3's individual results have given me a greater understanding concerning the selection of the test subjects.
Choosing subjects with above-average intelligence and providing them with more comprehensive information leads to far fewer obstacles throughout the experimentation. On the contrary, it adds a degree of truth to those baseless fears from before.
In the end, "truth" and "faith" are like the images seen on a phenakistoscope—
"They can been seen, shaped, and discarded... but never touched."
The same goes for her... and for me.

在整个实验中，作为目前掌握信息最多的参与者，6-1-3的最终实验结果，启发了我对于实验体选择的新思路。
过人的头脑和更全面的信息掌握，并不会给实验带来更多的阻碍。相反，这一切都让那些虚妄的恐惧，变得更加真实可信。
毕竟，真相与信仰都像费那奇镜中的绝景——
“可以获得，可以塑造，可以抛弃，但不可触碰。”
